The Evidence of Faith

April 2018: A Word From Dr. Stanley

If you had to describe the Christian life in just a few words, what would you say? Perhaps the most notable characteristic is that it’s a life of faith in Jesus Christ. That’s how we’re saved and how we are to walk thereafter—by faith. But have you ever considered what the visible manifestation of our faith is? In other words, how can others see that we believe in Jesus?

Matthew 5:16 tells us to let our light shine so others may see our good works and glorify God. James said it this way: “I will show you my faith by my works” (Matt. 2:18). Jesus is the Light of the World, and at salvation, we become children of Light. His life in us changes not only our character, attitudes, and words but also our deeds. In fact, God has already prepared the good works He intends for us to pursue (Eph. 2:10). Our job is to walk in them. But how do we know what they are?

God has already prepared the good works He intends for us to pursue.

Christ’s life is the pattern we should follow. While living among men, Jesus performed countless good works, but His goal wasn’t to do every possible miracle within His power. Rather, the specific works He accomplished and the way He carried them out were all according to His Father’s will (John 5:19).

That should be our goal as well. As you read this month’s devotions, consider what good works God is calling you to do as you walk obediently with Him one step at a time. Let His Word guide both your actions and attitudes so the Lord will be glorified through you.

What happens to my notes

16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

18 A VOICE WAS HEARD IN RAMAH, WEEPING AND GREAT MOURNING, RACHEL WEEPING FOR HER CHILDREN; AND SHE REFUSED TO BE COMFORTED, BECAUSE THEY WERE NO MORE."

10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.
